June Data & Lydia's Story

In June 2026, there were over 140 calls to 211 for Lincoln County and more than 70 into our office, all from individuals looking for resources. About 14% were from individuals seeking utility assistance, while 8% called about employment/income resources. Approximately 4% needed help with transportation. Nearly half of the calls were from individuals looking for housing or shelter assistance.

One caller, Lydia*, reached out to our office in a panic. She's nearly 80 years old and lives on fixed income. She didn't have any close family, so when she fell victim to a scam that wiped out her bank account, she didn't know what she would do. She had gone on a website that she had thought was real and safe. Unfortunately, it wasn't. Despite her hard work and normal independence, Lydia found herself having to ask for help for the first time. Her rent was coming due, and she didn't have it. She was facing eviction. Thankfully, United Way of Lincoln County was able to connect her with security classes from the Lincoln County Senior Center, put up a portion of the owed amount, and help her find other organizations that could also help. Because the organizations came together, Lydia is now living in her apartment, safe from the threat of homelessness.

Lydia's story, unfortunately, isn't unique. We helped or heard from three or four senior citizens who were similarly scammed just in the month of June. Other families were struggling because of illness or sudden medical problems. Some struggled because of transportation problems. All of them needed help to get back on their feet. Between 211 and our local office, we were able to connect people to the resources they needed in order to get on the path to a thriving and successful life.
